Wedge uses an oval rim opening and a rim profile that slopes away at the sides. Its model codes, measurement conventions and receiver options depend on the instrument family. This reference separates published geometry from manufacturer performance claims and records unresolved source discrepancies.

How to read an oval rim measurement
The Gen2 trumpet guide measures the inner diameter on the long vertical axis, .04 in below the rim; 66 denotes .660 in in that system. The checked 665MV G3 product uses the same depth convention. Tuba documentation uses .05 in. These are family-specific conventions, not a universal rule for every Wedge instrument. Do not compare diameters from different measuring positions as exact equivalents. A maker’s Bach or Schilke comparison is a fitting reference, not proof of identical geometry. The checked G3 trumpet and trombone product pages describe asymmetric upper/lower rim profiles and recommend the wider portion at the top, with the dot down; both also describe reverse orientation as playable. This advice is tied to those G3 examples. 665MV G3 brass trumpet, one piece ↗ · 98C G3 brass trombone, .240 throat ↗
Rim size, cup shape and throat diameter do not by themselves establish resistance, tone or endurance. Manufacturer claims about range, comfort or embouchure benefits are not independent clinical or controlled performance evidence; a playing trial remains important.
Selected trumpet cup codes
| Code | Published design context |
|---|---|
| ES | Extra shallow; maker compares depth with Schilke 6A4A/13A4A. |
| S | Shallow; maker compares depth with Schilke 14A4A. |
| LV | Lead V: shallow upper cup with a deeper V-shaped section. |
| MV | Modified V-shaped transition near the bottom; maker compares depth with Bach 3C. |
| MDV | Medium-deep V family; no numerical cup depth supplied in this comparison. |
| RT | Deep V-shaped cup for rotary trumpet. RT does not mean Reeves Technical. |
Depth comparisons are the manufacturer’s descriptions. No exact cup depth in millimeters or cup volume is inferred from these codes.

| Model / instrument | Published inner diameter | Configuration / source |
|---|---|---|
| 665MV G3 brass, one piece Trumpet | .665 in; measured .04 in into cup | #27 (.144 in) or #25 (.1495 in) throat; Medium backbore 665MV G3 brass trumpet, one piece ↗ |
| 98C G3 brass, .240 variant Trombone | .980 in (24.89 mm), from comparison chart | This product is .240 in throat; chart also lists a .250 in option 98C G3 brass trombone, .240 throat ↗ · Bach trombone comparison chart ↗ |
| 67FLD brass top Flugelhorn | .670 in; measured .04 in into cup | Deep cup; #15 throat. Separate backbore/shank required 67FLD brass flugelhorn top ↗ |
| 70M, American shank French horn | 17 mm, as published | Medium cup; #14 bore; Double Oval Cup. The code is not a .700 in diameter 70M French horn, American shank ↗ |
| 28G Gen2 brass, European shank Tuba | 1.28 in (32.51 mm) | Geib-type modified funnel cup; .325 in throat, conflicting metric value noted below 28G Gen2 brass tuba, European shank ↗ |
Flugelhorn fitting documentation describes modular tops with separate receiver-specific backbores; it identifies former one-piece models as discontinued while mentioning remaining French-shank inventory. This is not a promise of current availability. Flugelhorn fitting guide ↗
Tuba cup codes distinguish F (shallow modified V), G (Geib-type modified funnel), H (Helleberg funnel) and D (deep bowl). Confirm American or European receiver fit with the maker rather than inferring it from the instrument’s country of manufacture. Tuba overview and fitting guide ↗
Hybrid tenor-horn family, including TH79
| Model | Published diameter (in) | Published diameter (mm) |
|---|---|---|
| TH71 | .71 in | 18.03 mm |
| TH73 | .73 in | 18.54 mm |
| TH75 | .75 in | 19.05 mm |
| TH77 | .77 in | 19.56 mm |
| TH79 | .79 in | 20.06 mm |
The family page lists all five models above. Throat dimensions and numerical cup depths are not supplied there; they remain unknown in this reference.
Source discrepancies and limits
- The trombone chart prints 1.00 in as 24.62 mm for 100C and 100AL. Multiplying by 25.4 gives 25.40 mm. This is a calculated conversion, not a measurement or a maker-confirmed correction. Bach trombone comparison chart ↗
- The 28G tuba page pairs a .325 in throat with 8.13 mm. The calculated conversion is 8.26 mm when rounded to two decimals. Confirm the intended bore with Wedge; do not silently substitute either value. 28G Gen2 brass tuba, European shank ↗
- The .240 and .250 in trombone throats are real listed options. The chart gives 101GS a .270 in throat and 101G a .280 in throat; shared digits do not make them identical. Bach trombone comparison chart ↗
- The 70M horn’s published 17 mm diameter is not decoded by assuming the trumpet naming convention. 70M French horn, American shank ↗
